Say 1 more than a number (up to 100) 1 more than 4 is 5. There are seven marbles in this jar. If I put one more in, how many are there?
Say 1 less than a number (up to 10) 1 less than 8 is 7. There are ten beads in the pot. If I take one out, how many are left?
Count on from any number (up to 10)   Start at 5. Count on until you reach 10.
Say numbers in order (up to 20)   How many marbles are in this pot?

Year 1

Target  Example     Can your child answer these?
To know all number bonds to 10 by heart.

0 + 10 = 10

1 + 9 = 10

2 + 8 = 10

What do I need to add to 7 to make 10? Use number cards 0-9 – can you pair these to make 10?
To recall addition facts to 5.

0 + 1 = 1

0 + 3 = 3

4 + 1 = 5

2 + 3 = 5

Which numbers make 4?

How many ways can you think of to make 5?
To recall subtraction facts 5

4 – 1 = 3

3 – 2 = 1

5 – 4 = 1
Using 5 beans, hide some under a beaker. How many are there left? What is the subtraction I just performed?
To count on in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Complete the sequence 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, __, __

How far can you count in 2s? 5s? 10s?

90, 80, 70, __, __
To recall doubles up to double 10.

Double 2 is 4.

Double 6 is 12.

Double 8 is 16.
Roll a dice – what is double that amount? I doubled a number and got 18. What was my number?

Year 2

Target

 Example

Can your child answer these?
To know all number bonds to 20 by heart.

0 + 20 = 20

1 + 19 = 20

2 + 18 = 20

3 + 17 = 20
How many pairs of numbers do you know which make 20? How many more must I add to 16 to make 20?
To know which multiples of 10 combine to make 100.

0 + 100 = 100

10 + 90 = 100

20 + 80 = 100

Look at these multiples of 10. Which go together to make 100?

10  20  30  40  50  60 70

To recall all doubles up to double 20.

1 + 1 = 2

2 + 2 = 4

up to

19 + 19 = 38

20 + 20 = 40

What is double 8? 11? 14?

Roll two numbers on a dice and then double it.
To derive halves from corresponding doubles.

Half of 2 is 1.

Half of 10 is 5.
I started with a number, I halved it and got 12. What did I start with?
To quickly recall multiplication facts for 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

0 x 2 = 0

3 x 5 = 15

6 x 10 = 60
What is 3 x 2? 5 x 10? 2 x 6?

To derive corresponding division facts for 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

20 ÷ 5 = 4

22 ÷ 11 = 2

50 ÷ 10 = 5

What is 40 ÷ 5? 18 ÷ 2?

70 ÷ 10?

Year 3

Target  Example        Can your child answer these?
To know all sums and differences for multiples of 10 up to 100.

70 + 80 = 150

60 – 40 = 20

60 + 30 = 90

40 – 30 = 10
Add 80 and 30. Tell me how you did it? Tell me all of the pairs of 10s which make 90.
To know by heart pairs of numbers which make 100.

51 + 49 = 100

75 + 25 = 100

63 + 37 = 100
What must you add to 62 to make 100? How much change would I get from £1 if I spent 69p?
To know multiplication facts for the 3, 4, 6 and 8 times table.

0 x 4 = 0

11 x 3 = 33
