School Uniform Policy

It is our school policy that all children wear school uniform when attending school or when participating in a school-organised event outside normal school hours.

 Aims and objectives

Our policy for school uniform is based on the notion that school uniform:

  • Promotes a sense of pride in the school
  • Engenders a sense of community and belonging towards the school
  • Is practical and smart
  • Makes children feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance and identifies the children with the school
  • Prevents children from coming to school in fashion clothes that could be distracting in class
  • Is regarded as suitable wear for school and good value for money by parents and carers
  • Is designed with health and safety in mind

N.B. All items of clothing should be clearly marked with the child's name

On health and safety grounds we do not allow children to wear jewellery in school. The exception to this rule is one small pair of earring studs in pierced ears (one earring per ear) and watches. We ask the children to either remove these objects during PE and games, or preferably refrain from wearing them on the relevant days. If children are unable to remove stud earrings themselves they must cover them with micro pore tape brought from home. If they are unable to cover or remove their earrings they will be unable to take part in the PE lesson for health and safety reasons. Children wishing to have their ears pierced must have them done at the beginning of the 6 weeks summer holiday so that they can be removed on their return to school in September.

Children should wear ‘sensible flat school shoes’ with laces, buckles or Velcro fastenings to ensure safety at all times. Shoes should be comfortable and practical for the children, which are also suitable for outdoor play. On rainy days, wellies can be worn but a change of shoes should be brought into school in a separate bag.

To ensure the health and safety of all children at Seaton Sluice First school, we expect each child to follow our PE dress code.

  • Children will change into their PE kit for indoor and outdoor PE.
  • If children forget their PE kit, we expect children to take part in the lesson using spare school kit.
  • Children with long hair will be expected to have it tied back for PE lessons.
  • All watches and jewellery should be removed.
  • Earrings to be covered with micro pore tape/elastoplasts if they cannot be taken out.
  • For Dance and Gymnastics children will take part in plimsolls or bare feet.
  • For outdoor PE and games activities in the hall children will be expected to wear plimsolls or trainers.

The Role of Parents

We ask all parents who send their children to our school to support the school uniform policy. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their child has the correct uniform and that it is clean and in good repair.

The Role of Governors

It is the governors’ responsibility to ensure that the school uniform meets all the regulations concerning equal opportunities.
If there are significant reasons why parents want their child to wear clothes that differ from the school uniform, the governors will consider personal circumstances.
