The Governing Body meets termly and its purpose is to:-
• help the school to set high standards by planning for the school’s future and setting targets for school improvement
• ensure school improvement is happening and effective
• be a critical friend to the school offering support and advice
• help the school respond to the needs of families and the community
• make the school accountable to the public for what it does
• plan, develop and review school policy
• exercise its responsibilities and powers in partnership with the head teacher and staff
In England, the Governing Body of a maintained school is constituted under the School Governance Regulations 2012, with the detailed arrangements set out in the school's instrument of government. The Department for Education's current maintained schools governance guidance confirm the following core requirements:
1. The Governing Body consists of two committees:
- Pupil Standards and Welfare
- Finance and Resources
- at least two parent governors elected by parents/carers
- the Headteacher
- one elected staff governor, elected by staff
- one local authority governor, nominated by the local authority
- co-opted governors , who may be appointed by the Governing Body where permitted, particularly to bring relevant skills and experience.
Reports and minutes of the meetings are kept in school and are available to members of the public.
